Biography:
Dr. Yun Shao joined Kobo Products Inc. in 1996 and currently serves as the vice president of R&D.  He has 20 years of experience in micro TiO2 and ZnO development and in inorganic sunscreen technology and regulations.  He is also experienced in pigment surface treatment, wet grinding, specialty cosmetic ingredients, color cosmetics and global cosmetic ingredient regulations. He has presented his work in various scientific conferences including IFSCC congress and FLSCC Sunscreen Symposium.  Dr. Shao holds 5 US patents. He has co-authored several chapter books and technical papers on surface treatment and inorganic sunscreen formulation. Dr. Shao earned his Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and his B.S. in Applied Chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China.  He is the founding member of Chinese American Cosmetic Professional Association and the President during 2011-2012. He is also member of Society of Cosmetic Chemist and Tristate CACS.

Sanam Fazilova, Technical Marketing at Active Concepts, LLC, received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Queens University of Charlotte. Since 2012, Sanam worked with multiple cosmetic brands as a makeup artist to promote cosmetic and skincare products that meet customers’ needs. She began her career at Active Concepts in 2017. Sanam focuses on conceptualizing and executing strategies for brand development and product development with collaboration from R&D while keeping up with industry trends and materials to forecast consumer product needs and desires.

Biography:
Dr. Grune is a degreed chemical, mechanical, and materials science engineer, and chemist, possessing expertise related to chemical, mechanical, electrical, and medical products. He has combined this experience by assisting clients in the pursuit of product formulation and intellectual property protection for the last 25 years. He has direct experience in chemical processes, formulation chemistries, polymers and composites, service life prediction, and risk analysis including risk reduction technologies. He is also the Founder and CEO of 3rd Rock Essentials, a personal care product company. In addition, Dr. Grune also serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the MEM Program in the School of Engineering teaching courses involving polymer science, thermodynamics, and intellectual asset management (IAM) regarding green sustainable technologies, thermodynamics, life cycle assessment, and IP valuation for the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University.

Sunscreen Monograph – Final Rule, Proposed Rule, What’s Next!

Biography:
Dr. Theresa Michele is the Director of the Division of Nonprescription Drug Products (DNDP) in the Office of New Drugs, Center of Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Prior to joining FDA, she spent 10 years in industry, with clinical research experience across a variety of therapeutic areas in both commercial and development stage companies. Dr. Michele left industry in 2007 to join the FDA in the Division of Pulmonary and Allergy Drug Products, where she served as both a clinical reviewer and team leader. She is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care medicine, completing her training at Johns Hopkins University, where she currently serves on the faculty. She obtained her BS in Integrated Life Sciences from Kent State University and MD from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (now Northeast Ohio Medical University) as part of a 6-year combined program.

Hossein Birjandi Nejad is a Senior Skin Care Application Scientist in the Lubrizol Skin Essentials business group. In my role at Lubrizol, I am responsible for creating technical solutions to address unmet market needs while working with cross-functional teams resulting in introduction of new products in both cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Before joining Lubrizol, I received my PhD from Syracuse University, Syracuse Biomaterials Institute (SBI) in Polymer Science.  Hossein has extensive experience of oral presentations in international conferences including: International Federation of Societies of Cosmetics Chemists (IFSCC), American Chemical Society (ACS), Materials Research Society (MRS) and American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE).

Jürgen holds a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Technische Universität Darmstadt where he graduated summa cum laude.

Biography:
Uli Osterwalder studied Chemical Engineering at ETH Zurich, Switzerland and at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. He joined Ciba-Geigy in Basel in 1979 where he first developed a Phosgene Generator in central process development. Later he developed his leadership skills in Project Management and Process Analytics. At Ciba Specialty Chemicals Uli Osterwalder helped establish new business development in Fabric Care and Personal Care. After the acquisition by BASF SE he became Senior Marketing Manager and Scientific Adviser in Sun Care in Ludwigshafen and Duesseldorf. 2016 Uli Osterwalder came back to Basel, working for DSM as senior Senior Scientific Adviser suncare for two years. 2018 he started his own company, Sun Protection Facilitator GmbH and is committed to contribute to further improvements in sun protection. Uli Osterwalder works for ISO on the development of new UV protection assessment methods and is author and co-author of numerous scientific articles and book chapters on sun protection.

Product feasibility in skin care, composition of R&D plans covering efficacy and toxicology; planning, execution and data interpretation into claims, formulations, delivery for improved efficacy and attenuated toxicity. He was a member of the COLIPA expert Sunscreen Task force for approximately 8 years. He has expertise in product development (concept-to-launch).  Dr. Ayala has authored numerous claim support documents for dermatological, vaginal, rectal, and gastrointestinal topics. He is skilled in the use of odor control technologies in feminine hygiene products, skilled in the use of probiotics and prebiotics in personal care products, and an expert in the solubilization of hard to dissolve drugs in stable emulsions. He has authored/coauthored 9 patents, and 2 patents are pending.  Dr. Ayala has given talks to the SCCC on topics related to career development and public speaking, Antiperspirants, Wine, Chocolate, Feminine Hygiene, and Formulating Natural products for Microbiome. Biography:
Julian Hewitt graduated from Oxford University in 1988 with a BA Honours Degree in Chemistry. After graduating, he joined Tioxide, working on new product development. In 1991, he joined Tioxide’s physical sunscreens business, remaining with the business as it moved from Tioxide to ICI, Uniqema, and finally Croda. During this time, Julian represented Uniqema and Croda as a technical expert for sun care products, developed and delivered training programmes for both internal and external audiences, and guided the development and launch of innovative new sun care ingredients. Julian left Croda in October 2011 and formed JPH SunCare Technologies, providing technical consultancy services, regulatory advice, and training to manufacturers of UV protection products and ingredient suppliers.  Julian has given numerous technical presentations including the Florida Sunscreen Symposium, CEP course at Florida Sunscreen Symposium (co-presenter). Rob is also actively looking into new ideas, chemistries and technologies that can be relevant to the personal care market as Croda looks to further innovate.  Rob has given presentations to academic and non-academic institutions as well as leading scientific and personal care conferences including those focused on advances in sun care claims and products including previous Florida meetings. Dr. Loretta Ciraldo is a highly sought-after dermatologist with over 40 years of experience. Robert Shengkui Hu received his Ph.D. in Photochemical Sciences in 1998 from The Center for Photochemical Sciences at Bowling Green State University under the direction of Professor Douglas C. Neckers. While serving in technical leadership roles in PPG Industries and the Beckers Group, Robert has devoted his professional career in applying photochemical sciences in various industrial applications, such as radiation curable coatings and inks, photoresists, photochromic materials, and photo protective technologies. Since joining Hallstar in 2012, Robert has been heavily involved in the suncare technology development for the personal care markets.  Robert has been a frequent presenter at various scientific and commercial conferences on various topics ranging from photochemistry and applications to technical trends in the coatings industry and cosmetic market.

Eduardo has Bachelor and Master Degree in Theoretical and Applied Physics from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Trained as a biophysicist with diversified industrial experience in the physical and life sciences Eduardo has developed and delivered scientific substantiation for new claims, mechanism of action of new active ingredients along with compelling communication to many different professionals across the areas of expertise. With extensive research experience in cosmetics, skin bioinstrumentation, medical devices and the effects of long UVA and Visible light on skin. Eduardo is a member of the US Sunscreen Task Force and ISO/TC 217/WG 7 (Sunscreen Methods) representing ANSI leading the Cosmetics Sun Protection ISO 23698 Project: Measurement of the Sunscreen Efficacy by Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (HDRS Method).

Dr. Nadim Shaath received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Minnesota. He then joined the Faculty at the State University of New York at Purchase and served as the Chairman of the Chemistry Department at SUNY-Purchase.  He was the President and CEO of KATO Worldwide, a flavor, fragrance, sunscreen and essential oil company and is currently the President of Alpha Research and Development, a research, sourcing and product development company in the fields of essential oils, Alpha has laboratories and warehouse facilities in White Plains, New York and Lincoln Park, New Jersey. Alpha promotes proprietary essential oils in partnership with Egypt, Tunisia and The Commores.  Dr. Shaath is a founding member of The PASS Coalition, a frequent speaker/moderator at many scientific meetings and is the author of numerous articles in chemical, flavor, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, essential oils and sunscreen journals and publications. He writes a bimonthly column in HAPPI magazine entitled “The Sunscreen Filter”. He is the author of four books on Sunscreens and Ultraviolet Filters including the widely distributed book entitled “Sunscreens” published by Taylor & Francis (2005). He has recently published his new coffee-table book entitled “Healing Civilizations: The Search for Therapeutic Essential Oils and Nutrients,” Cameron Books, Petaluma, CA (March 2017).
